How salary is taxed in Sri Lanka

Income tax in Sri Lanka is progressive: marginal rates rise from 6% to 36% as income grows. Employees also pay social contributions of around 8% of gross salary. A tax-free allowance of about LKR 1,800,000 per year is deducted before income tax. The standard VAT rate is 18%. For example, a gross salary of LKR 300,000 per month leaves about LKR 257,500 net, after LKR 18,500 income tax and LKR 24,000 in social contributions, an effective deduction rate of 14.17%.
