What the compare section is for
Every country page on this site answers one question for one country. The compare section turns that around: it takes a single figure from every country in the dataset and puts it in one sorted list, so you can see where a country sits before opening its calculator. There are nine rankings. Four describe pay: average salary, minimum wage, the net share of a typical salary an employee keeps, and the total cost of an employee to the employer. Three describe tax: the standard VAT rate, the top income tax rate and employee social contributions. Two describe time: the standard working week and public holidays in 2026.
The lists are a starting point, not a verdict. A country with a high top tax rate can still leave a typical employee with more net pay than a country with a low one, because allowances and social contributions differ far more than the headline rate. Each ranking has a note under the table explaining what its metric measures, what it leaves out and which figures are estimates. Tax rates are for the 2026 tax year; wage figures are the latest published national data.
